Members of the Rotary Club of Huntsville-Lake of Bays grabbed gloves and trash bags before heading out for their annual Earth Day clean up on April 28.

“Our Rotary club is proud of Huntsville and wants to project the best image possible for our visitors,” said Rotarian Jim Schiedel, project leader for 2016. “The main exits from Highway 11 to Huntsville are the first impression for many so we decided to concentrate our cleanup on these exits this year.”

About eight volunteers, including Rotarians and their family members, spent the evening collecting water bottles, fast food wrappers, empty oil jugs, paper and Styrofoam coffee cups, clothing, candy wrappers and more.

Twenty bags of garbage were collected in one hour.

“The biggest culprits are the users of the fast food restaurants.  This was most noticeable on the Muskoka Road 2 exits,” said Schiedel.

He said the club wanted to play its part in protecting the natural beauty of the area.

“Huntsville as a tourist destination contributes to the income of everyone employed in this beautiful part of Canada,” he said. “As the gateway to Algonquin Park we have thousands of visitors from around the world who pass through or stop in Huntsville on their journey. A clean Huntsville makes a positive lasting impression.”
